JEDDAH
A LOVE LETTER
CAPTURED BY DOA’A AKEEL
WRITTEN BY TEE BAKER
A city guarded by mountains and hugged by the sea, Jeddah’s charm often catches locals unawares, during travel or temporary departure. The city tugs at the heart like a tide at the coast, filling those who have let with a strong sense of yearning for this jewel-toned home.
Beyond the Corniche from North to South, Jeddah is renowned for its larger than life sculptures that grace roundabouts and serve as landmarks across the city. Relics of another era, they stand resolute under scorching sun, torrential rain and pressing humidity, steadfast staples in the upbringing of generations.
Filmmaker Doa’a Akeel captures the soul of the city in her project, Postcards From Jeddah. Inspired by the feeling intertwined with the structures themselves, her portrayal of these landmarks are tenderly reminiscent, conveying a palpable sense of nostalgia and belonging through the screen.
Of her work, Doa,a says, “I hope that people feel connected and hope to leave an impact... [I want to] take your brain on a very beautiful journey and give people laughter, depth and joy.”
